What does the Quran say makes a person truly noble?
Day 29 · Character, Society and Creation
1 / 9Day 29
What does the Quran say makes a person truly noble?
Today
Faith in the Quran is never only private. It shows in how you speak, how you treat the people around you, and how you walk on the earth. The surahs return again and again to manners: telling the truth, keeping promises, greeting well, asking before entering a home, holding back anger, forgiving.
A few passages gather much of this. Al-Isra 17:23-39 is a code of conduct, from honouring parents to walking without arrogance. Luqman's advice to his son (31:12-19) is a father's lesson in faith and humility. Al-Hujurat (49) protects people's honour within a community.
Today also widens the circle: to every race and language, to animals, and to the earth itself. It closes with the hardest manner of all: answering harm with something better (41:34).
What the Quran says
O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination. And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful. And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys."
Context Luqman, a wise man honoured in the Quran (most scholars say not a prophet), advising his son.
Faith in action: pray, enjoin good, forbid wrong, be patient. Then humility: no cheek turned in contempt, no swagger, a modest pace and a lowered voice.
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
Context Al-Hujurat, Madinah: a surah of manners for a growing community.
Three hidden harms are named: bad assumptions, spying and backbiting. Backbiting is pictured as eating a dead brother's flesh, something everyone finds repulsive.
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
Context Addressed to all humanity, not only believers. 30:22 calls the variety of languages and colours a sign of Allah.
Peoples and tribes exist so that we may know one another. Nobility before Allah is by righteousness, not by race, lineage or wealth.
And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.
Context Al-Bukhari and Muslim report a woman punished for starving a cat, and a man forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog.
Animals and birds are communities like us, known to Allah and gathered to Him. 30:41 adds that human hands spread corruption on land and sea.
See it
4:36 begins with worshipping Allah alone, then moves outward through everyone owed good treatment, and ends with a warning against the self-deluded and boastful.
The key word
iḥsān · Excellence; doing good beautifully
From husn, beauty. Ihsan is doing a thing well and giving more than is owed. 4:36 commands ihsan to parents, and 16:90 pairs it with justice. In a hadith in al-Bukhari and Muslim, it is to worship Allah as if you see Him, knowing that He sees you.
4:3616:90A common mix-up
Backbiting is only wrong if what you say is untrue.
A hadith in Muslim defines backbiting as mentioning your brother with what he dislikes. If it is true, it is backbiting; if it is false, it is slander, which is worse. Scholars allow narrow exceptions, such as seeking justice or warning someone of real harm, but 49:12 rules out casual talk about other people's faults.
49:1249:11Remember
Carry one verse
And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.
