Why does prayer begin with water?
Today
Worship in Islam has a rhythm. The Quran sets the frame: wash before prayer, pray at set times, fast in Ramadan, give zakah (the yearly alms) to named groups, and travel to the House in Makkah for Hajj if able. The Prophet ﷺ showed the details, and Muslims learn them from his Sunnah, his example.
Running through every command is the same note of ease. The sick and the traveller have concessions, clean earth can stand in for water, and prayer can be shortened on a journey. "Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you" (5:6). Today you will see the verses behind daily worship, and how alcohol was forbidden in stages.
What the Quran says
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. …
Context Madinan. It goes on to ghusl (a full wash) and tayammum with clean earth.
Wudu in four acts: wash the face, the arms to the elbows, wipe the head, and the feet.
Most read "your feet" with the washed parts, so the feet are washed. Shi'i scholars, following another recitation, read it with the head, so the feet are wiped.
Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night and [also] the Qur'an of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.
Context Makkan, from al-Isra. 11:114 and 4:103 also speak of prayer at set times.
From the sun's decline to the dark of night, and at dawn. Scholars read this as covering Dhuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha and Fajr.
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous -
Context Madinan, from al-Baqarah. The next verses excuse the sick and travellers, who make up the days (2:184-185).
Fasting is not new: it was prescribed for those before. Its aim is taqwa, being mindful of Allah.
Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
Context Madinan, from at-Tawbah. The Quran pairs zakah with prayer many times (e.g. 2:43).
Zakah goes to eight named groups: the poor, the needy, its collectors, hearts to be won, captives, debtors, Allah's cause, and stranded travellers.
See it
The Quran points to prayer at set times (4:103), naming dawn, the sun's decline and the night. The five times and their exact limits are detailed in the Sunnah.
The key word
ʿibādah · Worship; devoted service
From ʿ-b-d, to serve; an ʿabd is a servant. ʿIbādah covers the set rituals, but also any good act done for Allah: honest work, kindness, care for family. "I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me" (51:56).
51:561:5A common mix-up
Alcohol was forbidden in a single verse from the first day of Islam.
Scholars commonly read the verses as stages: 2:219 says its sin is greater than its benefit; 4:43 forbids coming to prayer intoxicated; 5:90-91 commands avoiding it altogether. The early community already drank, and the change came over years in Madinah. Reports in al-Bukhari say that when the final verse came, people poured out their wine.
2:2194:435:90-91Remember
Carry one verse
Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.
