Ibrahim and His Family
How did one man reason his way from the stars to their Maker?
Day 8 · Ibrahim and His Family
1 / 9Day 8
How did one man reason his way from the stars to their Maker?
Today
Ibrahim (Abraham) is honoured by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. The Quran calls him a leader for the people (2:124), a man devoutly obedient to Allah (16:120), and the one Allah "took as an intimate friend" (4:125).
His life is a series of tests. He questioned the idols of his father and his people, faced a fire, left part of his family in a barren valley, and saw a dream asking him to sacrifice his son. Each time he chose Allah, and each time Allah honoured him. Today you will follow his reasoning, his trials, and the House he raised in Makkah with his son Isma'il (Ishmael).
What the Quran says
And when he saw the sun rising, he said, "This is my lord; this is greater." But when it set, he said, "O my people, indeed I am free from what you associate with Allah. Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah."
Context After the star (6:76) and the moon (6:77).
What rises and sets cannot be Lord. He turns to the Creator alone, "inclining toward truth".
Most scholars, including Ibn Kathir, read this as a debate exposing his people's worship (6:83 calls it an argument). Others, in reports cited by at-Tabari, read it as his own search in youth.
He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you? Uff to you and to what you worship instead of Allah. Then will you not use reason?" They said, "Burn him and support your gods - if you are to act." Allah said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham."
Context He had broken his people's idols, all but the largest, and told them to ask it (21:58-63).
Gods that cannot speak, help or harm are not worth worship. When they try to burn him, Allah commands the fire to be cool and safe.
And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast." And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him, "O Abraham, You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Context He had prayed for a righteous child (37:100-101).
Father and son both submit. Allah stops it: the surrender was the test, and He ransoms the son "with a great sacrifice" (37:107).
The son is not named. Most scholars, including Ibn Kathir, say Isma'il, as Ishaq's birth is announced after (37:112). Others, including at-Tabari, say Ishaq.
And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing. Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
Context In Makkah, where Ibrahim had settled family "in an uncultivated valley" (14:37).
Even while building Allah's House, father and son pray to be accepted and for a community devoted to Him. Their next prayer (2:129) asks for a messenger from among them.
See it
It sets: "I like not those that disappear."
6:76It sets: "Unless my Lord guides me..."
6:77"This is greater." It sets too.
6:78"I have turned my face toward He who created."
6:79Each light rises, shines and sets. Step by step, Ibrahim shows that what disappears cannot be Lord, and turns to the One who made them all (6:76-79).
The key word
ḥanīf · One who inclines toward the truth
The root carries the sense of turning or leaning. A ḥanīf turns away from false worship and leans wholly toward Allah. Sahih International renders it "inclining toward truth". The Quran uses it again and again for Ibrahim, and calls the Prophet ﷺ to follow his path.
16:1203:6716:123A common mix-up
Islam began with Muhammad ﷺ, so Ibrahim belongs to an older, separate religion.
The Quran presents one path from the start: worship Allah alone and submit to Him. It calls Ibrahim "inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allah]" (3:67), and tells the Prophet ﷺ to follow "the religion of Abraham" (16:123). Muhammad ﷺ is presented as renewing that path, not inventing a new one.

Carry one verse
My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication. Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established."
