Hawazin
Nation of the Quran
Hawazinهوازن
Hunayn
A large confederation of tribes in the hills east of Makkah; the Prophet's ﷺ foster-mother Halimah came from one of its clans, the Banu Sa'd. After Makkah opened in 630, they gathered under Malik ibn Awf to attack the Muslims and ambushed them in the valley of Hunayn.
What does the Quran say?
Allah has already given you victory in many regions and [even] on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all, and the earth was confining for you with its vastness; then you turned back, fleeing.
Quran 9:25
How did they end?
The Muslims, shaken at first, held firm around the Prophet ﷺ and won (9:25-26). Hawazin then accepted Islam, and the Prophet ﷺ returned their captives to them.
What do historians say?
Hawazin are known from Arabic sources and poetry, not from archaeology. Hunayn is traditionally placed in a valley on the road between Makkah and Ta'if.
The lesson
Victory comes from Allah, not from numbers, as the believers learned at Hunayn (9:25).
