Thamudثمود
The Quran gives no dateAl-Hijr (Hegra), Arabia
Thamud came after Ad and carved their homes from the mountains (15:82). Their brother Salih called them to Allah, and they demanded a sign. A she-camel was given to them, with her own day to drink. The worst of them hamstrung her and dared Salih to bring the punishment (7:77).
What does the Quran say?
And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.

How did they end?
After three days a mighty blast and an earthquake seized them, and they lay dead in their homes (11:65-67).
What do historians say?
Assyrian records of Sargon II (c. 715 BCE) and later Greek and Roman writers mention Thamud. The grand tombs seen at Hegra (Mada'in Salih) today are Nabataean, cut around the 1st century, so they are later than the Thamud of the Quran.
The lesson
Signs are a test, and rejecting a clear sign brings ruin.
