Aws and Khazraj (the Ansar)الأوس والخزرج
Madinah
Two Arab tribes of Yathrib, long locked in feuds that ended in the battle of Bu'ath. Some of them met the Prophet ﷺ at Aqabah during the pilgrimage and pledged to protect him. When he emigrated in 622 they welcomed the emigrants and shared their homes and wealth with them.
What does the Quran say?
And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
Quran 59:9
How did they end?
They were not destroyed but honoured: Allah named them the Ansar, the Helpers, and joined their hearts after their enmity (3:103, 8:63).
What do historians say?
Yathrib appears in inscriptions of the Babylonian king Nabonidus, who lived at nearby Tayma in the 6th century BCE. The Quran calls the city Yathrib once (33:13).
The lesson
