The sultan of the Tanzimat reforms, who rebuilt the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah.

The Gulhane edict of 1839 promised equal rights and fair taxes for all subjects. He fought Russia in the Crimean War with Britain and France. The Ottoman rebuilding of the Prophet's Mosque, much of which still stands, was done in his reign.
