Leo III the Isaurianليو الثالث

Constantinople

The Byzantine emperor who held Constantinople against the great Muslim siege of 717–718.

He seized the throne just as Maslamah's army and fleet arrived. Walls, Greek fire and a harsh winter broke the siege. He later banned religious images, starting the Iconoclast controversy.
