Umar ibn Abd al-Azizعمر بن عبد العزيز

Damascus

A great-grandson of Umar ibn al-Khattab whose short, just reign is remembered as a return to the Rashidun way.

He gave up his family's luxuries, returned seized property, cut unjust taxes and sent preachers rather than armies. He asked scholars to write down the Prophet's ﷺ hadith before they were lost. He died after about two and a half years.

What grew out of it?

Many scholars call him the fifth rightly guided caliph.

The lesson

Power can be carried as a trust rather than a prize.
