A Kipchak former slave who became the most powerful sultan of his age.

He fought at Ain Jalut, then took the throne. He brought an Abbasid prince to Cairo as caliph in 1261, built a fast postal system, and won back much of the coast from the Crusaders, taking Antioch in 1268. He died in Damascus.
