Marrakesh

The Almoravid leader who built Marrakesh and saved al-Andalus at the Battle of Zallaqa in 1086.

A Sanhaja Berber of the Almoravid movement, he took charge in the north and helped found Marrakesh. Called in by the taifa kings, he crushed Alfonso VI at Zallaqa in 1086. He later took over al-Andalus himself and died at a great age.

What grew out of it?

He took the title 'Commander of the Muslims' and left the caliph's title to Baghdad.
