al-Hijr (Hegra)الحجر
The rocky land of Thamud, who carved homes from mountains and killed Salih's she-camel.
Thamud carved houses from the mountains 'feeling secure' (15:82) and hamstrung the she-camel sent as a sign, so the blast seized them. The ornate tombs seen today were cut later by the Nabataeans. Passing here on the way to Tabuk, the Prophet ﷺ told the Companions to enter only weeping and not to use its water.
