Damascus

Author of the Forty Hadith and Riyad al-Salihin, read in homes and mosques everywhere.

He came to Damascus from the village of Nawa at eighteen, attended up to twelve lessons a day, and lived simply, never marrying. He wrote a great commentary on Sahih Muslim and works that settled the Shafi'i school, and refused to approve a war tax Baybars wanted from the people. He died in his mid-forties.

What grew out of it?

Riyad al-Salihin and the Forty Hadith are among the most read Islamic books after the Quran.
