A judge whose Lisan al-Arab is the best-known classical Arabic dictionary.

He served as a judge in Tripoli in North Africa and as a clerk in the Mamluk chancery in Cairo. Lisan al-Arab gathers the great dictionaries before it, with examples from the Quran, hadith and poetry, into one huge work.

What grew out of it?

Translators and students of the Quran still turn to it for the meaning of words.
