Capital of Srivijaya, a Sumatran sea kingdom that traded with the caliphate.
Srivijaya ruled the Malacca Strait from about 650 to 1100. Arab writers reported a letter from one of its kings to the caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz asking for someone to teach him Islam. Palembang later became a Muslim sultanate.
