In the Quran

In the QuranThe woman who disputed

Khawlah bint Tha'labahخولة بنت ثعلبة

Madinah

The woman whose complaint about her husband Allah heard from above the seven heavens.

Her husband Aws ibn al-Samit declared her 'like his mother's back', an old Arab way of ending a marriage. She came to the Prophet ﷺ and argued for herself and her children, complaining to Allah. Aishah, in the same room, could not hear all she said, yet Allah revealed: Allah has heard the words of the one who disputes with you about her husband.

What does the Quran say?

Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing.

Quran 58:1

What grew out of it?

Her case ended the pre-Islamic practice of zihar and set the rules of expiation.

The lesson

No complaint made sincerely to Allah goes unheard.
