The Khawarij

Who declared Muslims disbelievers657 CE onwards

Relied on'Judgement is only for Allah', twisted

Undone byAli at Nahrawan

Soldiers who left Ali after Siffin, called the arbitration disbelief, and then judged most Muslims disbelievers. They killed the Companion's son Abdullah ibn Khabbab and his pregnant wife on the road.

How it ended

Ali defeated them at Nahrawan in 658, as the Prophet ﷺ had foretold. Their remnants killed Ali and rose in revolt for centuries.

It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.

The lessonExtremism begins by judging others' faith and ends by spilling their blood.

Authentic hadithThe Prophet ﷺ described young men of foolish minds who recite the Quran but it goes no deeper than their throats (Sahih al-Bukhari 3611). Ali called their slogan 'a word of truth by which falsehood is intended' (Sahih Muslim). The killing of Ibn Khabbab is from al-Tabari.Sahih al-Bukhari 3611 ↗
