The rebels against Uthman

Who besieged the caliph in his home656 CE · 35 AH

Bands from Egypt, Kufa and Basra, stirred by complaints and false letters, besieged Caliph Uthman in his house for weeks. He forbade the Companions to fight for him, and the rebels broke in and killed him as he read the Quran.

How it ended

His blood fell on the words 'Allah will be sufficient for you against them' (2:137). His killing opened the first civil war, and most of his killers died in the wars that followed.

…and Allah will be sufficient for you against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Quran 2:137

The lessonUthman chose to die rather than let Muslims fight over him.
