Approximate dateMadinah

Raised among the Byzantines, he gave all his wealth to Quraysh to be allowed to emigrate.

Captured as a boy and raised in Byzantine lands, Suhayb came to Makkah as a freed man and grew rich. When he tried to leave for Madinah, Quraysh blocked him, so he handed over all his wealth. The Prophet ﷺ greeted him: 'Your trade has profited.' Umar chose him to lead the prayers while the new caliph was chosen.
