A town grows around a temple at Eridu in southern Iraq. Sumerians later remember it as the first city, where kingship began before a great flood.
How it touches Islam Flood memories survive in Mesopotamia and far beyond; the Quran tells Nuh's flood as 'a sign for the worlds' (29:15).
