The Mahdi of Sudan
Muhammad Ahmad, who declared himself the Mahdi in 1881, takes Khartoum from the British-backed Egyptians. His state lasts until British guns destroy it at Omdurman in 1898.
How it touches Islam Most scholars rejected his claim: the hadith describe the true Mahdi by signs he did not fulfil.
