Aligarh

Sayyid Ahmad Khan opens a college in Aligarh to teach Muslims modern science and English alongside their faith. It grows into Aligarh Muslim University.

How it touches Islam Deoband and Aligarh, founded nine years apart, were two answers to one question: how should Muslims live under foreign rule?

Sayyid Ahmad Khan

Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
