Ivan the Terrible storms Kazan, capital of a Muslim Tatar khanate. Its imam Qol Sharif dies defending the city with his students, and the mosques are pulled down.
How it touches Islam It was the first Muslim land Russia conquered; a new Qol Sharif mosque opened inside the Kazan kremlin in 2005.
