A Delhi scholar who founded the college at Aligarh to give Indian Muslims a modern education.

After the 1857 uprising he set out to rebuild Muslim confidence under British rule. In 1875 he founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, later Aligarh Muslim University, and wrote a commentary on the Quran.
