Kazanقازان
Tatar city on the Volga, heir to the Bulgars who accepted Islam in 922.
The Volga Bulgars accepted Islam in 922, when the caliph's envoy Ibn Fadlan visited them. Kazan became the seat of a khanate after the Golden Horde split, until Ivan the Terrible conquered it in 1552. Its Tatars remain one of Europe's oldest Muslim peoples.
