City of the two Niles, taken by the Sudanese Mahdi's army in 1885.
Founded by Egypt in the 1820s where the White and Blue Nile meet. Muhammad Ahmad, who claimed to be the Mahdi, took it in 1885 and killed the British general Gordon. Britain retook Sudan in 1898.
