Approximate dateBasra

A Mu'tazili who turned to defend the creed of Ahmad ibn Hanbal with reasoned argument.

A student of the Mu'tazili al-Jubba'i for decades, he publicly renounced their teaching around the age of forty in the mosque of Basra. He then used their own tools of argument to defend Sunni belief: that the Quran is God's uncreated speech and that believers will see Him in the Hereafter.

What grew out of it?

The Ash'ari school became the theology of most Shafi'i and Maliki scholars.
