A Cairo scholar of hundreds of works, who finished Tafsir al-Jalalayn.

He wrote on tafsir, hadith, grammar, history and medicine, and believed himself the renewer of his century. He completed Tafsir al-Jalalayn begun by al-Mahalli and wrote al-Itqan on the sciences of the Quran. At forty he withdrew from public life to write.
