He gathered hadith he judged to meet al-Bukhari's and Muslim's standards but missing from their books.

Born in Nishapur, he served as a judge and studied with a great many teachers. His Mustadrak was later reviewed by al-Dhahabi, who found many of its gradings too lenient. He also wrote one of the first manuals on the sciences of hadith.
