An Abbasid envoy whose report on the Volga Bulgars and the Rus is unique.

In 921 the caliph al-Muqtadir sent him with an embassy to the king of the Volga Bulgars, who had asked for teachers of Islam and help building a fort. His account describes the Turks, the Bulgars and the Rus, including a Rus ship burial.

What grew out of it?

The Volga Bulgars' Islam is the root of the faith of today's Tatars.
