His tafsir and his world history are the foundations of both fields.

From Amol near the Caspian, he left home at about twelve to study and settled in Baghdad. His Jami' al-Bayan gathers the early explanations of each verse with their chains, and his History of the Prophets and Kings runs from Creation to his own day. His own school of law did not last.
