A Baghdad master who reviewed even the two Sahihs, chain by chain.

Named after the Dar al-Qutn quarter of Baghdad, he was famed for his memory and for uncovering hidden defects in narrations. His critique of about two hundred reports in the two Sahihs was answered point by point by later scholars, which only sharpened the science.

What grew out of it?

His Sunan and his book of defects ('Ilal) remain standard works of hadith criticism.
