Approximate dateBasra

A Basran scholar famous for strict honesty and for interpreting dreams.

The son of a freedman of Anas ibn Malik, he traded cloth and went to prison for a debt rather than cheat. He was among the first to insist on checking chains of narration: 'This knowledge is religion, so look to whom you take your religion from.'

What grew out of it?

His saying on checking narrators became a founding principle of hadith criticism.
