His tafsir, explaining the Quran by the Quran and hadith, is the most read in the world.

Born near Busra in Syria, he studied in Damascus under Ibn Taymiyyah and the hadith master al-Mizzi, whose daughter he married. His tafsir explains verses first by other verses, then by hadith and the words of the Companions, and flags Isra'iliyyat. He also wrote al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah, a history from Creation to the end of time.

What grew out of it?

Abridged and translated into many languages, it is often a reader's first tafsir.
