Ibn Muqlaابن مقلة

Approximate dateBaghdad

An Abbasid vizier who set the proportions of Arabic script that calligraphers still follow.

He measured each letter by the rhombic dot of the pen and the height of the alif, giving the cursive scripts their balanced form. Three times vizier, he fell in court intrigues and lost his right hand, yet he is said to have kept writing with a pen tied to his arm.

What grew out of it?

The six classical scripts used to copy the Quran rest on his system.
