Approximate dateDamascus

A jurist who taught men and women, a caliph among them, in the mosques of Damascus and Jerusalem.

Married to the Companion Abu al-Darda, she spent long hours in study and worship. She taught hadith and fiqh in Damascus and Jerusalem, and the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik is reported to have sat in her circle. She said she had sought worship in everything and found none better than sitting with the learned.

What grew out of it?

Her circle is an early proof that women taught openly in the great mosques.
