The great jurist of Egypt, whom al-Shafi'i judged more learned than Malik.

A wealthy man who gave away his yearly income, he led the scholars of Egypt and exchanged famous letters with Malik on whether the practice of Madinah binds all Muslims. Al-Shafi'i said his students failed to preserve his school.

What grew out of it?

His letter to Malik is one of the earliest records of respectful scholarly disagreement.
