Hasan al-Basriالحسن البصري

Approximate dateBasra

A tabi'i whose sermons on fearing God and the shortness of life are still quoted.

Born in Madinah to a freed maid of Umm Salamah, he grew up among the Companions and settled in Basra. He taught Quran, hadith and fiqh in its mosque and spoke plainly even to the governor al-Hajjaj. Almost every early Sufi chain, and many scholarly ones, pass through him.

What grew out of it?

Both the ascetic tradition and the theology circles of Basra trace their beginnings to his gatherings.
