Al-Ghazaliأبو حامد الغزالي

Tus

A famous professor who left everything to seek certainty, then wrote the Revival of the Religious Sciences.

Head of the Nizamiyya in Baghdad by his mid-thirties, he fell into a crisis of doubt and lost his voice. In 1095 he left and spent years in seclusion in Damascus, Jerusalem and on Hajj. His Ihya brought law, theology and the inner life together, and his Incoherence of the Philosophers challenged Ibn Sina.

What grew out of it?

The Ihya remains a guide for the heart across the Muslim world.

The lesson

Learning is worth little if it does not reform the heart.
