A mathematician who reformed the Persian calendar and solved cubic equations, later famed for poetry.

Working for the Seljuk sultan Malik-Shah, he led the team that made the Jalali calendar, more accurate than the Julian. He solved cubic equations using conic sections. Quatrains attributed to him became world-famous through an English translation.

What grew out of it?

The Iranian calendar still follows the system his team designed.
