Approximate dateBasra

A Basran from Oman who wrote the first Arabic dictionary and mapped the metres of Arabic poetry.

He arranged Kitab al-Ayn by the sounds of the letters, from the throat to the lips, and worked out the metres of Arabic verse. He also replaced the old coloured dots with the vowel marks still used in the Quran today: fatha, damma and kasra.

What grew out of it?

Every mushaf printed today carries his vowel signs.
