Al-Mutanabbiالمتنبي

Approximate dateAleppo

A poet of Kufa whose verses are counted the summit of classical Arabic poetry.

Born in Kufa, he wandered as a young man and was jailed for leading a revolt. At the Aleppo court of Sayf al-Dawla he wrote his finest praise of the Hamdanid wars against Byzantium. He was killed by bandits near Baghdad, reportedly after a line of his own poetry shamed him out of fleeing.

What grew out of it?

Arabic speakers still quote his lines as proverbs.
