The first to write a full life of the Prophet ﷺ.

A Madinan student of al-Zuhri, he gathered reports on the Prophet's ﷺ life and campaigns and moved to Iraq, where he wrote for the Abbasid court. His original book is lost; it survives mainly in Ibn Hisham's edition and in quotations by al-Tabari.
