Ibn al-Shatirابن الشاطر

Approximate dateDamascus

The timekeeper of Damascus's great mosque, whose planetary models match those of Copernicus.

As muwaqqit he set the prayer times and built a great sundial for a minaret of the Umayyad Mosque. His planetary models, free of Ptolemy's equant, are mathematically the same as those Copernicus used about 150 years later.

What grew out of it?

A copy of his sundial still marks the prayer times in the mosque.
