An engineer whose book of machines includes the famous elephant clock.

Chief engineer to the Artuqid princes of Diyarbakir, he described some fifty machines in his Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices (1206). They include water pumps with crankshafts, automata and the elephant clock.

What grew out of it?

His crank-and-rod mechanisms prefigure parts of later engines.
