Cordoba

A Maliki judge of Cordoba whose commentaries on Aristotle made him 'the Commentator' in Europe.

Grandson of a chief judge of Cordoba, he served as judge in Seville and Cordoba and as physician to the Almohad caliph. He wrote Bidayat al-Mujtahid, a classic of comparative fiqh, and The Incoherence of the Incoherence in reply to al-Ghazali. Late in life he was briefly exiled and his books burned, then restored to favour.

What grew out of it?

Latin translations of his commentaries shaped European philosophy for centuries.
