Approximate dateCordoba

An Andalusian geographer whose book gives the earliest detailed picture of the Ghana Empire.

He never left al-Andalus, but gathered reports from merchants and travellers. His Book of Roads and Kingdoms (1068) describes Ghana's capital, with its Muslim quarter of twelve mosques beside the king's town.

What grew out of it?

Historians of West Africa still rely on his account.
