A surgeon of Cordoba whose illustrated book of instruments taught Europe surgery for centuries.

Court physician to the caliphs of Cordoba, he wrote al-Tasrif, a medical encyclopedia in thirty parts. Its last part, on surgery, shows some two hundred instruments, many of his own design, and was translated into Latin.
