A Khwarazmian polymath who measured the earth and wrote the first deep study of India.

Brought to Ghazna by Mahmud of Ghazna, he went with the sultan's campaigns into India, learned Sanskrit, and wrote a fair-minded account of Hindu beliefs and science. Using a mountain near Nandana, he estimated the earth's radius remarkably well.

What grew out of it?

His book on India is still read as a model of studying another culture with fairness.
