A great city of Khurasan, home of Imam Muslim and Omar Khayyam.
Nishapur was home of the hadith master Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, the poet and mathematician Omar Khayyam and the Sufi poet Farid al-Din Attar. Its Nizamiyya college was famous, and al-Ghazali studied there under al-Juwayni. The Mongols massacred its people in 1221.
